Implementing Father-inclusive Strategies with Low-Income and/or Native American Families
(3 CEUs designed to meet AZBBHE requirement for cultural competency/diversity)

Presented by Neil Tift, M.A.

Neil Tift has served as Director of Training for three national fatherhood programs in Washington, D.C. and Mesa, AZ since 1998 and is the founding director of the Fathers Resource Center in Minneapolis. He also started Paternal Instincts, a non-profit agency that provides staff training, technical assistance and consultation to government agencies and community organizations to support the development and expansion of resources for low-income fathers and their families. For more than 20 years, he was adjunct professor of Family Studies at Metropolitan State University in St. Paul, MN, teaching ethics, child psychology and human service administration. Neil is a family mediator, parent educator and men’s therapist.

Workshop Description: This workshop will offer an overview of select programs, strategies, and practices that have proven effective in recruiting and serving low-income fathers and Native American fathers, allowing them to enhance their co-parenting skills and to build healthy relationships with the mothers of their children. It will also offer practical tips for creating more father-friendly environments to increase fathers’ participation in family service delivery systems. We will develop strategies for participants to expand their capacity to meet the growing needs of this previously underserved constituency.
